[Maps of East Battle Creek, Michigan].

Series 9 and 29 of record group 59-4 consist of maps of East Battle Creek Michigan, originally collected by either the Michigan Geological Survey or the Michigan Lands Division. The first map is a map and field notes of re-survey of East Battle Creek, by W.C. Rowley under the direction of D.V. Bell, Commissioner of the Land Office. The re-survey was completed in accordance and pursuant to a joint resolution of the state legislature, March 11, 1844 (scale is 20 rods : 1 in.). Isaac H. Merritt's name appears in the corner of the map. The second map is of University Village or East Battle Creek, Michigan, made by John D. Pierce (July 5, 1837). The map is 22" x 17 1/4" in size, on cloth, with a scale of 330 ft. : 1 in.

The Michigan Geological Survey was created by Public Act 20 of 1837. Its purpose was to conduct a geological and mineralogical survey of the state. The state legislature appointed Douglass Houghton the first state geologist (1837). In 1921, the state legislature established the Department of Conservation, and the Michigan Geological Survey became part of that department (Public Act 17 of 1921). John Davis Pierce, minister and educator, was born in Chesterfield, N.H. When he was 20, he began studying under the Rev. Enoch Pond. In 1822, he graduated from Brown University, taught at an academy, and entered Princeton Theological Seminary in either 1823 or 1824. He was ordained and assumed a pastorate of a Congregational Church at Sangerfield, Onieda County, N.Y. In the autumn of 1831, he began his missionary work at Marshall, Mich. In 1836, Gov.
